Our farm's resident is the stellate sturgeon

Stellate sturgeon is a fish of the sturgeon family, which has a very characteristic appearance due to the greatly elongated shape of the nose or snout, the length of which is about 60% of the entire length of the head. The antennae are short, without fringe. There are 40-54 rays in the dorsal fin, 22-35 in the anal fin. There are 9-16 dorsal scutes, 26-43 lateral scutes, and 9-14 ventral scutes. The sides of the body between the rows of scutes are covered with star-shaped plates. Gill rakers 24-29.
Like all sturgeons, stellate sturgeon is a long-liver among freshwater fish. According to archaeological materials, the maximum recorded age of stellate sturgeon was 41 years, while for modern fish it is 35 years. Azov stellate sturgeon is sometimes distinguished as an independent subspecies. The stellate sturgeon can form hybrids with two closely related species of sturgeon - the sterlet and the thornback.
