Due to the great value of black caviar as a delicacy, most species of sturgeon are now on the verge of extinction. Black caviar (English caviar) is a processed, unfertilized caviar of sturgeon fish. Of the six species found in the wild nature of Ukraine, two - thorn and Atlantic sturgeon - have already disappeared, and the rest are in critical condition. The main reason for their disappearance is poaching (fishing has been officially banned since 2000), and sturgeon meat and caviar available for sale must only be artificially grown in aquaculture. At the same time, along with the legal product, you can find a fake that imitates aquaculture production, being at the same time a poached product from wild fish.
Therefore, in order to find out this feature of the black caviar market in Ukraine, the WWF and the OSCE are looking for the help of volunteers. We need to collect information about the origin and producers of black caviar at the points of sale, in order to then check and identify potential suppliers of wild fish.
What should you do?
Going to the supermarket, shop or market?
Take a photo (on your phone or other gadget) of the appearance of the jar of black caviar, along with the price tag, and record the date and place of sale of the black caviar. It is desirable to be able to read as much information as possible from the label.
Fill in the table in the attachment or at the link.
Send photo and table to ngozak@wwfdcp.org
Term of Campaigns and Incentives
The campaign period is from June 1 to June 30, 2015. The three participants who provide the most complete information on the largest number of cans of caviar will receive branded t-shirts and eco bags from WWF. The participant who provides the most complete information about the bank from the most unexpected place of sale will receive an incentive prize from the OSCE.
Each find is extremely important to finally stop the illegal trade of wild red-listed species and save fish that have survived dinosaurs for millions of years, but may not survive humans.
